Judges 7:11
And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.
Judges 7:11 (KJV)
Context
The book of Judges records the history of Israel after Joshua’s leadership, when God raised up judges to deliver His people. In this chapter, Gideon is chosen to lead Israel against the Midianites, who had oppressed them for seven years. God had already reduced Gideon’s army to a small number, and Gideon had received reassurance through the fleece test (Judges 6:36-40) and the dream of an enemy soldier (Judges 7:9-10). Now God tells him to go down to the enemy camp with his servant Phurah and listen to what the soldiers say. This act of going down is an act of obedience, and it prepares Gideon to receive the confirmation he needs.
Meaning
The phrase “thine hands be strengthened” means that Gideon’s courage and resolve would be renewed. This is not a mere emotional boost; it is divine enablement for the task ahead. God uses the enemy’s own conversation to confirm His promise of victory. Gideon is not just told about the enemy’s fear; he is led to hear it himself. This personal, firsthand confirmation builds his faith in a way that secondhand reports could not. God often provides specific, personal assurances to bolster our faith when we face daunting challenges.
Biblical connections
This act of listening is an act of obedience that strengthens faith. Throughout Scripture, God often fortifies His people for the tasks He assigns. The presence of Phurah shows that God’s encouragement can come in the company of a trusted companion. Theologically, this passage underscores God’s sovereignty: He orchestrates even the idle talk of enemies to fulfill His purposes and strengthen His people. Faith is often strengthened through obedient action, as Gideon goes down to the camp as instructed and receives the confirmation he needs.
Application
Gideon’s example teaches us to seek confirmation from God when facing doubts. We can do this through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking wise counsel. God often uses various means to speak to us, and we should be attentive to His leading. When we trust in God and listen to His voice, our faith can be strengthened. God equips and empowers His people to fulfill His purposes, enabling us to overcome obstacles that seem impossible. He can speak through any circumstance to encourage His servant.
Seeking Confirmation: Gideon sought God’s reassurance through signs, and we can seek God’s guidance through prayer and His Word.
Strengthened Faith: Gideon’s faith was strengthened through God’s message in the enemy camp; similarly, our faith grows as we trust and listen to God.
God’s Provision: God provided Gideon with the assurance he needed to step out in faith; He also equips us for His purposes.
Worship and Gratitude: Gideon responded with worship and praise; we should express gratitude for God’s faithfulness and guidance.
Reflection
Gideon’s obedience in going down to the camp, despite his fear, opened the way for God to strengthen him. Faith is often strengthened through obedient action. As we face our own battles, we can trust that God will provide the necessary strength to proceed. He is sovereign over every circumstance, and He can speak through any situation to encourage His servant. The strengthening of hands is a divine enablement for the task ahead, aligning with the broader biblical theme of God empowering those He calls.
