Judges 6:36

And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said,

Judges 6:36 (KJV)

Judges 6 tells how the Israelites suffered under Midianite oppression for seven years because they disobeyed God. When they cried out, God chose Gideon to save them. In verse 36, Gideon speaks directly to God, repeating the promise he has already received: “If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.” His words show that he knows the promise, yet he still asks for reassurance. This request comes after God’s clear call, showing that even a chosen leader may need confirmation.

Gideon does not doubt God’s power or promise. Instead, he humbly seeks confirmation for his own faith. His request reveals dependence on God, not distrust. He understands that deliverance comes only through God’s strength, not his own. Some commentators suggest Gideon may have asked for a sign not only for himself but also to encourage the men who would follow him into battle. His prayer acknowledges that Israel’s salvation rests solely in God’s hands.

Gideon’s request leads directly to the fleece test in Judges 6:37-40, where God graciously gives two signs. This pattern continues throughout Judges: God raises judges and patiently strengthens their faith. Gideon’s example also connects to other faithful leaders who asked for confirmation, such as Hezekiah in 2 Kings 20:8-11, showing that God welcomes sincere requests for assurance. God accommodates human weakness when the heart is sincere.

Gideon’s example teaches several lessons:

  • Humility: He admits his weakness and relies on God’s intervention. We should approach God with the same honest dependence.

  • Seeking confirmation: It is not wrong to ask God for reassurance when we are unsure. We must ask with a sincere heart, not to test God but to follow Him more confidently.

  • Trusting God’s promises: Gideon’s request is based on what God had already said. We can trust the promises in Scripture and pray for guidance through the Holy Spirit.

  • Trusting God’s plan: God’s ways are often beyond our understanding. As Gideon saw God’s faithfulness, his faith grew. Ours can grow too when we seek God’s direction.

Gideon’s request reminds us that God is patient with our need for assurance. He does not scold Gideon for asking; instead, He answers with clear signs. When we face difficult callings, we can bring our uncertainties to God in prayer. He welcomes honest questions and strengthens those who sincerely seek His will. God’s gracious response encourages us to trust Him even when we feel weak.
