Judges 19:16

Posted on 30 December 2024
Listen to this article

“Behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites.”

Context:The book of Judges is set during a period of Israel’s history when they were governed by a series of judges. It was a time characterised by cycles of rebellion, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. Judges 19 is a particularly disturbing chapter that recounts a tragic incident involving a Levite and his concubine.

Introduction:In this verse, we are introduced to an old man who came from his work in the field. He was from Mount Ephraim but was residing in Gibeah, a city inhabited by the Benjamites.

Significance of the Old Man:The mention of the old man from Mount Ephraim indicates that he was not originally from Gibeah but had taken up residence there temporarily. His arrival is important because he plays a crucial role in the events that unfold later in the chapter.

The Location:Gibeah was a city in the territory of the tribe of Benjamin. It becomes the setting for the horrific incident that occurs later in the chapter.

Foreshadowing:The mention of the old man and his temporary residence in Gibeah foreshadows the events that are about to take place. It sets the stage for the unfolding tragedy and highlights the importance of this particular location in the narrative.

Tribal Identification:The verse emphasises that the inhabitants of Gibeah were Benjamites. This detail is significant because it establishes the identity of the people involved in the later events, revealing that the incident occurs within the Israelite community.

Overall Theme:This verse sets the context for the subsequent events in Judges 19, which depict a grave moral decline and the consequences of such behaviour. It highlights the spiritual and moral decay prevalent in the land during the period of the judges.

It’s important to note that the events described in Judges 19:16 and the subsequent verses are highly disturbing and depict grave acts of violence and immorality. The chapter serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of turning away from God’s ways and highlights the need for justice, righteousness, and spiritual renewal.
