Judges 19:16

And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites.

Judges 19:16 (KJV)

The book of Judges describes a time when Israel had no king and each person did what seemed right in his own eyes. Judges 19 records a tragic event involving a Levite and his concubine. This verse introduces an old man who becomes central to the story.

The old man was returning from his work in the field at evening. He was from Mount Ephraim but lived as a sojourner in Gibeah, a city of the tribe of Benjamin. Being a sojourner meant he had no family or clan protection there. His status made him vulnerable, yet he still offered hospitality later in the chapter.

The time of day matters. Evening was when travelers sought shelter. The old man’s honest labor and his presence in the city set the stage for the Levite’s arrival. His identity as an Ephraimite among Benjamites also shows the fractured nature of Israelite society, where tribal loyalty often outweighed national unity. As an outsider, he lacked local kinship ties, which made him especially dependent on the goodwill of others.

Hospitality was a sacred duty in ancient Israel, especially toward strangers and sojourners. The old man’s willingness to host the Levite contrasts sharply with the wicked men of Gibeah, who later sought to harm their guest. This contrast highlights the moral decay that had spread even among God’s people. His example stands as a quiet witness to the value of welcoming the vulnerable.

This verse reminds us that God sees the vulnerable and the faithful. The old man’s quiet obedience in a corrupt city is a model of steadfastness. Believers today are called to show kindness and hospitality even when society around them grows hostile to righteousness. We can trust that God honors those who serve Him faithfully, even in small ways.

The tragedy that follows in Judges 19 is a sobering warning about the consequences of abandoning God’s ways. Yet the old man’s small act of faithfulness shines as a light in the darkness. It encourages us to remain faithful in our own communities, trusting that God honors those who serve Him.
