Judges 20:16

Posted on 31 December 2024
Listen to this article

“Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.”

Context:The book of Judges records a turbulent period in the history of the Israelites when they were ruled by a series of judges. During this time, the people of Israel often fell into sin and faced oppression from neighbouring nations. Judges 20 is a chapter that describes a civil war that broke out between the tribe of Benjamin and the rest of the tribes of Israel.

The Battle:In Judges 20, the Israelites gather to address a grievous crime committed by some men from the tribe of Benjamin. They demand that the tribe of Benjamin hand over the guilty individuals for justice. However, the Benjamites refuse to comply, leading to a conflict. The verse in question highlights a unique skill possessed by a group of 700 men from the other tribes of Israel. These men were left-handed and highly skilled in slinging stones with great accuracy.

Symbolism and Application:This verse showcases the diversity and ingenuity of God’s chosen people. The fact that these men were left-handed and skilled in slinging stones demonstrates that God uses individuals with various abilities and talents to accomplish His purposes. It is a reminder that God can work through anyone, regardless of their perceived limitations or unconventional qualities.

  • God’s Sovereignty:Throughout the book of Judges, we see a cycle of the Israelites falling into sin, facing oppression, crying out to God, and being delivered by a judge raised up by God. Despite the flaws and failures of the Israelites, God remained sovereign and worked out His plans. In the context of this verse, God’s sovereignty is evident in providing the Israelites with skilled warriors who could use their left-handedness and accurate slinging abilities to fight against their opponents.
  • Faithfulness and Obedience:This verse also emphasises the importance of faithfulness and obedience in God’s people. The 700 chosen men were prepared and skilled for battle. Their commitment to training and honing their abilities demonstrates the need for believers to be diligent in equipping themselves for spiritual battles. It serves as a reminder to seek God’s guidance, develop our skills and talents, and be prepared to engage in the spiritual warfare we face in our lives.

Overall, Judges 20:16 highlights God’s sovereignty, the diverse abilities He uses, and the significance of faithfulness and obedience in His people. It encourages us to trust in God’s provision and to be diligent in our preparation for the battles we face in life.
