Ruth 3:16

Listen to this article

“And when she came to her mother in law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.”

Context:The book of Ruth tells the story of a Moabite woman named Ruth who showed great loyalty and faithfulness to her Israelite mother-in-law, Naomi. After the death of their husbands, Ruth accompanies Naomi back to Bethlehem, where God blesses her with a husband named Boaz. Ruth 3:16 is part of a significant event that takes place during their time in Bethlehem.

Returning to Naomi:In this verse, Ruth returns to her mother-in-law after an eventful night. The chapter starts with Naomi giving instructions to Ruth to approach Boaz, who was a close relative and potential kinsman-redeemer. Ruth follows Naomi’s guidance and uncovers Boaz’s feet as a sign of submission and request for his protection and redemption.

Ruth’s Encounter with Boaz:After Ruth uncovered Boaz’s feet, he woke up startled and realized Ruth was there. Ruth explained her purpose and her relationship to Boaz as Naomi’s kinsman. Boaz recognized Ruth’s virtue and her act of kindness toward Naomi. He commended her for choosing to take refuge under the wings of the Lord God of Israel.

Ruth’s Report to Naomi:Upon her return to Naomi, Ruth is met with curiosity and anticipation. Naomi asks, “Who art thou, my daughter?” This question suggests that Naomi is eager to hear about the events of the night and whether Ruth’s encounter with Boaz yielded any positive results.

Sharing the Events:Ruth proceeds to tell Naomi everything that had transpired between her and Boaz. She explains all that the man had done to her, highlighting Boaz’s kindness, acknowledgement of their close relationship, and his willingness to act as a kinsman-redeemer.

Importance of Ruth’s Report:Ruth’s report to Naomi serves to build anticipation and excitement. It foreshadows the potential for a favorable outcome for Ruth and Naomi’s future. The details Ruth shares with Naomi demonstrate Boaz’s generosity, integrity, and potential willingness to fulfill the role of a kinsman-redeemer.

Lessons from Ruth 3:16:

  • Faithfulness and Obedience:Ruth’s obedience to Naomi’s instructions demonstrates her faithfulness and trust in God’s guidance. Her actions can inspire us to trust in God’s plan even when it involves stepping out in faith.
  • God’s Provision:Through Ruth’s encounter with Boaz, we see God’s providential care for His people. He orchestrates circumstances and uses individuals to fulfill His purposes.
  • Communication and Sharing:Ruth’s open and honest communication with Naomi serves as a reminder of the importance of sharing our experiences and seeking guidance from wise counsel, especially from those who are spiritually mature.

Overall, Ruth 3:16 showcases Ruth’s faithfulness, Naomi’s anticipation, and the beginning of a significant turning point in their lives. It teaches us the value of obedience, trust in God’s provision, and the importance of open communication within the community of believers.
