Ruth 3:17
And she said, These sixe measures of barley gaue he me, for he said to me, Go not emptie vnto thy mother in law. Ruth 3:17 (KJV)
In this verse we hear Ruth, a Moabite widow, reporting to Naomi after her night at the threshing floor. She says, “He gave me these six measures of barley; for he said unto me, Go not empty unto thy mother‑in‑law.” The narrative continues with the additional detail that Ruth also received a measure of flour and that the men of the place praised her, saying, “A wonderful woman thou art.”
The book of Ruth unfolds during the time of the judges and tells how a foreign woman, after the death of her husband, chooses to stay with her mother‑in‑law Naomi rather than return to her own people. Naomi’s plan in chapter 3 is to secure a future for Ruth by having her approach Boaz, a close relative of their deceased husbands, at the threshing floor. Laying at his feet was a culturally accepted way to signal a request for marriage and redemption.
When Ruth returns to Naomi, she recounts Boaz’s generous provision of six measures of barley and a measure of flour. This substantial gift symbolizes Boaz’s recognition of Ruth’s integrity and his willingness to care for both Ruth and Naomi. Barley was a staple grain, and such a quantity represented tangible support and a sign of Boaz’s intention to act as a kinsman‑redeemer.
The episode highlights God’s providence throughout the story. Though the narrative does not explicitly state divine intervention at this moment, the provision of food reflects God’s care working through faithful people. Ruth’s loyalty and Boaz’s generosity together advance the larger redemptive plan that ultimately brings the lineage of David and, ultimately, the Messiah.
Application for today: Ruth’s story teaches the value of steadfast loyalty, faithfulness, and trust in God’s unseen hand. Like Ruth, believers can rely on God’s provision even when circumstances seem uncertain. Boaz’s example encourages us to extend generosity and kindness to those in need, reflecting God’s own character.
In conclusion, Ruth 3:17 captures a pivotal moment of provision and affirmation. The six measures of barley, the measure of flour, and the commendation from the townspeople together underscore the faithfulness of God and the importance of trusting His plan, even amid challenging circumstances.
