1 Samuel 7:1

Listen to this article

“And the men of Kirjathjearim came, and fetched up the ark of the Lord, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the Lord.”

Historical Context: 1 Samuel is a book in the Old Testament that describes the transition of Israel from the period of judges to the establishment of a monarchy under King Saul and later King David. During this time, the Israelites faced numerous challenges, both internal and external.

Ark of the Lord: The Ark of the Lord, mentioned in this verse, was a sacred symbol of God’s presence among the Israelites. It was a wooden chest overlaid with gold, containing the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, Aaron’s rod, and a jar of manna (Hebrews 9:4). The ark symbolised God’s covenant with His people and was highly revered.

Kirjathjearim: Kirjathjearim was a city located in the hill country of Judah. After the Philistines captured the Ark of the Covenant during a battle, they experienced plagues and hardships, leading them to return the ark to the Israelites. The men of Kirjathjearim, in this verse, came to retrieve the ark and bring it to their city.

Abinadab’s House: Abinadab’s house was the place where the Ark of the Lord was kept temporarily. Abinadab was entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding the ark until a more permanent location could be established.

Sanctification of Eleazar: In this verse, Eleazar, the son of Abinadab, was sanctified or set apart for the specific task of keeping the Ark of the Lord. This act was important because it demonstrated the reverence and respect the Israelites had for the ark and the need for someone responsible and consecrated to guard it.

Key Themes:

Reverence for God’s presence: The retrieval and sanctification of the Ark of the Lord emphasise the importance of honouring God’s presence among His people. It highlights the Israelites’ recognition of the sacredness of the ark and their desire to have it in their midst.

Faithfulness and responsibility: Abinadab and Eleazar were entrusted with the task of safeguarding the ark, signifying the importance of faithfulness and responsibility in carrying out God’s commands and preserving His covenant.

God’s faithfulness: Despite the Ark being captured by the Philistines, God remained faithful to His people by orchestrating its return and ensuring it was kept safely. This event is a testament to God’s providence and care for His chosen people.

Application: This verse encourages us to honour God’s presence in our lives. We should treat the things that symbolise His covenant and relationship with us with reverence and respect. It also reminds us of the importance of faithfulness and responsibility in carrying out our God-given tasks. Just as Eleazar was entrusted with guarding the Ark of the Lord, we are called to faithfully fulfil the responsibilities and assignments given to us by God.

Overall, 1 Samuel 7:1 highlights the significance of the Ark of the Lord, the faithfulness of God, and the need for reverence and responsibility in our relationship with Him.
