1 Samuel 7:1

And the men of Kirjath–jearim came, and fetched up the ark of the Lord, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the Lord.

1 Samuel 7:1 (KJV)

First Samuel tells how Israel moved from the time of the judges to the rule of kings. Just before this verse, the Philistines captured the Ark of the Lord in battle. But God sent plagues upon them, so they sent the Ark back to Israel on a cart. It came to Bethshemesh, and from there the men of Kirjath-jearim came to take it. Kirjath-jearim was a city in the hill country of Judah. These men acted willingly and promptly, showing that they wanted God’s presence among them again.

The Ark of the Lord was a sacred chest overlaid with gold. Inside it were the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, Aaron’s rod, and a jar of manna (Hebrews 9:4). The Ark represented God’s covenant and His presence with Israel. Bringing it into the house of Abinadab on the hill was a serious act. The people did not leave the Ark in an open field; they gave it a proper home. They also sanctified Eleazar, Abinadab’s son, to keep the Ark. To sanctify means to set apart for holy use. Eleazar was chosen for the special duty of guarding the Ark. This act shows that serving God requires dedication and holiness.

The Ark stayed in Kirjath-jearim for twenty years, and during that time Israel lamented after the Lord (1 Samuel 7:2). This long waiting prepared the people for Samuel’s call to repentance. The care given to the Ark contrasts with the earlier neglect of holy things. The writer of Hebrews later mentions the contents of the Ark to show how God provided for His people in the wilderness. This verse also connects to the broader story of God’s faithfulness. Even after the Ark was captured, God brought it back and provided a place for it among His people.

This verse encourages us to honour God’s presence in our lives. We should treat the things that remind us of His covenant with reverence and respect. Just as the men of Kirjath-jearim gave the Ark a proper place, we should give God a central place in our homes and hearts. The sanctification of Eleazar reminds us that serving God is a serious calling. We are each entrusted with responsibilities in God’s work, and we must carry them out faithfully. The people acted together, showing that caring for sacred matters is a community duty. We too should support one another in serving God and keeping His truth safe.

God’s presence among His people is a privilege that demands faithful stewardship. The men of Kirjath-jearim responded with joy and action. Their example asks us how we handle the things of God. Are we willing to set apart time, resources, and people for His service? Do we treat His Word and His church with the same care that Eleazar showed for the Ark? This verse calls us to receive God’s presence with gladness and to serve Him with whole hearts. It also reminds us that God remains faithful even when we fail. He restores what is lost and provides for His people, just as He did for Israel.
