1 Samuel 10:22

Listen to this article

“Therefore they enquired of the Lord further, if the man should yet come thither. And the Lord answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff.”

In this verse, we find ourselves in the narrative of the prophet Samuel anointing Saul as the first king of Israel. Let’s take a closer look at the context to better understand the significance of this verse.

The Israelites desired to have a king to lead them, similar to the surrounding nations. In response to their request, God instructed Samuel to anoint a man whom He had chosen to be the king. This man turned out to be Saul, who was from the tribe of Benjamin.

In the preceding verses, Samuel had gathered all the tribes of Israel together at Mizpah, where he cast lots to determine who would become king. The lot fell on Saul, indicating God’s choice. However, when they looked for Saul, they couldn’t find him. This led the people to inquire of the Lord again, seeking guidance on Saul’s whereabouts.

Context:The verse you mentioned, 1 Samuel 10:22, reveals God’s response to their inquiry. The Lord informed them that Saul had hidden himself among the stuff or baggage. This hiding is significant because it reveals a lack of confidence on Saul’s part and provides insight into his character.

Saul’s act of hiding among the baggage reflects his initial hesitancy and insecurity about assuming the role of king. It reveals a lack of self-assurance and a sense of inadequacy. This incident foreshadows the later events in Saul’s life where his insecurity and disobedience lead to his downfall.

This verse also highlights God’s sovereignty and involvement in the selection and appointment of leaders. Despite Saul’s initial reluctance, God had chosen him for this important role. God’s response to the inquiry reinforces His providential guidance and control over human affairs.

Overall, 1 Samuel 10:22 serves as a reminder of the importance of trusting in God’s plan, even when we may feel inadequate or uncertain about the tasks assigned to us. It cautions against allowing insecurity and fear to hinder us from fulfilling the purposes God has for our lives.
