Therfore the men of Iabesh said, To morrow wee will come out vnto you, and ye shall doe with vs all that seemeth good vnto you. 1 Samuel 11:10 (KJV)

1 Samuel is a book in the Old Testament that focuses on the transition from the period of judges to the establishment of kingship in Israel. In chapter 11, the Ammonites, led by King Nahash, have laid siege to the city of Jabesh‑gilead, threatening to conquer and subject its inhabitants.

In the preceding verses (1 Samuel 11:1‑9), we learn that the Ammonites have surrounded Jabesh‑gilead and are planning to inflict severe harm on the city’s inhabitants. The desperate situation prompts the people of Jabesh‑gilead to request a treaty from Nahash, hoping for some respite.

In 1 Samuel 11:3, the elders of Jabesh ask Nahash for seven days’ respite to send messengers to Israel. When the messengers return with news of Saul’s impending help, the men of Jabesh respond in 1 Samuel 11:10: “Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.” The verse is correctly placed after the messengers from Saul arrive with news of help, not as a direct response to Nahash’s demand.

Courage in desperate situations: The people of Jabesh‑gilead were facing a grave threat, but they didn’t lose hope. They showed courage by reaching out to their fellow Israelites for assistance, demonstrating that even in the face of overwhelming odds, it’s essential to seek help rather than surrendering to despair.

The power of unity: The men of Jabesh‑gilead planned to go out to the Israelites for collective assistance. Their unity was crucial in standing against the enemy. This emphasizes the importance of unity within communities and the strength it brings when people join forces for a common cause.

Trust in God’s deliverance: Although not explicitly mentioned in this verse, the events that follow in 1 Samuel 11 reveal that God intervenes and delivers Jabesh‑gilead from the Ammonites. This serves as a reminder to trust in God’s faithfulness, even in desperate times, and seek His intervention and guidance.

Seeking God’s wisdom: While the people of Jabesh‑gilead were willing to submit to Nahash’s terms, they ultimately sought help from their fellow Israelites, represented by Saul, who would later become the first king of Israel. In our own lives, when facing challenging situations, it is crucial to seek wisdom and guidance from God and those who walk in His ways.

Historical and prophetic significance: This passage provides historical context, highlighting the threats Israel faced during the period of judges and the need for strong leadership. It foreshadows Saul’s rise as king, as he becomes the deliverer of Jabesh‑gilead, subsequently leading to his anointing as king over all Israel.

Remember, as you explore the Bible, it’s helpful to read verses in their larger context to gain a deeper understanding of the narrative and its significance.
