Then said Saul vnto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from vs. And when they had numbred, behold, Ionathan and his armour bearer were not there. 1 Samuel 14:17 (KJV)

were not

there. 1 Samuel 14:17 (KJV)

The book of 1 Samuel recounts the transition of Israel from a period of judges to the establishment of a monarchy. At this point in the narrative, Saul is the first king of Israel, and his son Jonathan has just initiated a bold attack against the Philistines.

Saul, upon realising that Jonathan and his armour‑bearer were missing from the army, instructs his men to take a headcount to determine who had gone. This indicates that Jonathan had acted independently and without consulting Saul.

Jonathan’s absence from the army creates a sense of suspense and anticipation as the story unfolds.

Key themes and lessons:

Jonathan’s courage and faith: Jonathan’s actions in this chapter demonstrate his bravery and his trust in God’s guidance. He takes the initiative to attack the Philistine garrison, believing that God can grant victory regardless of the odds.

Trusting in God’s power: Jonathan’s actions reflect a deep reliance on God’s strength and faithfulness. He recognises that the Israelites’ success does not depend solely on their own resources but on God’s intervention.

Leadership and obedience: Saul’s reaction highlights a potential flaw in his leadership. Instead of seeking God’s guidance or trusting in Him, Saul resorts to a headcount, perhaps hoping to identify the culprit who had acted independently. This reveals a lack of spiritual discernment and a failure to recognise God’s hand at work through Jonathan’s actions.

God’s sovereignty: The story in 1 Samuel 14 ultimately demonstrates God’s sovereignty over human affairs. He uses Jonathan’s courageous act to deliver the Israelites from their enemies and fulfil His purposes.

Application:

Trust in God’s power: Like Jonathan, we should trust in God’s strength and guidance when facing challenges or daunting situations. We must remember that our success ultimately depends on Him and His faithfulness.

Seeking God’s guidance: Saul’s hasty response teaches us the importance of seeking God’s guidance in leadership decisions and daily life. We should cultivate a spirit of prayer and seek His wisdom before making important choices.

Courageous obedience: Jonathan’s example encourages us to step out in faith, even when circumstances seem unfavourable or uncertain. When we are confident of God’s leading, we can be bold in obedience and follow His calling.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and consult other biblical commentaries or resources to gain a deeper understanding of the passage.
