1 Samuel 18:14
And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the Lord was with him.
1 Samuel 18:14 (KJV)
Context
This verse comes after David’s victory over Goliath and his rise in popularity. King Saul becomes jealous and fearful of David because of David’s success and the people’s admiration. The surrounding passage, 1 Samuel 18:5-16, shows Saul’s growing envy, even as David succeeds in every task Saul gives him.
Meaning
The verse begins by highlighting David’s wise conduct in all his ways. Despite his rising prominence, David remained humble and acted with sound judgment, discernment, and discretion. The Hebrew word can also mean “prospered,” suggesting that those who behave wisely generally succeed well. This wise behavior contributed to his success and the favor he found with the people.
The latter part states that the Lord was with David. This phrase underscores divine favor and guidance. It indicates that David’s wisdom and success were not solely his own doing but came from God’s presence and blessing. God’s presence gave David strength, protection, and wisdom to face opposition. The Targum renders this as “the Word of the Lord was for his help.“
Biblical connections
The phrase “David behaved himself wisely” appears four times in 1 Samuel 18 (verses 5, 14, 15, and 30). This repetition stresses the divine prudence that must mark the man whose life is hidden in God. In this, David was a type of Christ, as in Isaiah 52:13, where the Servant of the Lord “shall deal prudently.“
Application
David’s wise behavior is an example for us. We should seek wisdom in all our ways, making decisions according to God’s principles, being discerning in relationships, and seeking godly counsel.
Just as God was with David, He desires to be with us today. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we receive the indwelling Holy Spirit. God’s presence empowers and guides us, granting wisdom and strength for life’s challenges.
David’s story reminds us to trust in God’s provision and guidance. Even in opposition, we can rely on His presence to lead us. As we lean on God and seek His wisdom, He will direct our steps and accomplish His purposes.
Reflection
This verse calls us to examine our conduct. Are we behaving wisely in all our ways, or only when convenient? True wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord and leads to a life that honors Him. When we walk with God, abiding in Him and subjecting our thoughts to His, we can trust His presence goes with us, as it did with David.
