David had gained favour with Saul after his victory over Goliath. In verse 18, Saul promised his daughter Merab to David as a wife, but later gave her to another man. “And when his servants told David these words”: This refers to Saul’s servants informing David about Saul’s offer to give his daughter Michal in marriage.
“It pleased David well to be the king’s son-in-law”: David was pleased with the idea of marrying into the royal family and becoming Saul’s son-in-law. This was a prestigious position and a sign of honour.
“And the days were not expired”: This implies that the time period for the agreement to be fulfilled had not yet passed. It suggests that David eagerly awaited the opportunity to become Saul’s son-in-law.
Lessons and Applications:Trust in God’s Timing: David’s response in this verse shows his willingness to trust God’s timing. Despite being anointed as the future king by Samuel (1 Samuel 16:13), David didn’t take matters into his own hands. Instead, he patiently waited for God’s plan to unfold, even when faced with delays or unexpected changes. Contentment in God’s Will: Although David desired to be Saul’s son-in-law, he didn’t let personal ambition or disappointment consume him. He recognised that his ultimate goal was to serve God faithfully, and he found contentment in aligning with God’s will. Honoring Authority: David respected Saul’s authority as the king and acted respectfully in response to Saul’s offer. Even though Saul’s behaviour toward David would later change, this incident demonstrates David’s initial willingness to honour and serve his king.
