1 Samuel 19:13

Listen to this article

“And Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, and put a pillow of goats’ hair for his bolster, and covered it with a cloth.”

Context:The book of 1 Samuel records the story of the transition from the period of the judges to the establishment of the monarchy in Israel. In this particular chapter, Saul, the first king of Israel, becomes increasingly jealous of David, who had gained favour with God and the people. Saul’s jealousy drives him to make numerous attempts to kill David.

The Background:In the preceding verses, Saul’s jealousy reached a point where he decided to kill David. However, David’s wife, Michal, Saul’s daughter, warns him of the danger and helps him escape. In verse 13, we see Michal’s clever ruse to deceive her father’s messengers and protect David.

The Image and the Deception:Michal takes an image and places it in the bed, covers it with a cloth, and puts a pillow of goats’ hair for his bolster. This action was an act of deception. The purpose was to make it appear as though David was lying sick in bed when Saul’s messengers arrived. By doing this, Michal created a diversion and gave David time to escape.

The Symbolism:It is important to note that the use of an image in this context does not refer to a physical representation of a deity or idol. Instead, it likely refers to a household idol or a figure that resembled a human shape. The purpose of using this image was to deceive and give the appearance of David’s presence in the bed. However, it is essential to recognize that this action was not condoned by God, as the worship of idols or images was strictly forbidden in the Mosaic Law (Exodus 20:4-5).

Lessons from the Passage:

  • Trusting God in Difficult Circumstances:David faced a life‑threatening situation due to Saul’s jealousy. However, he trusted in God’s protection and relied on Him to deliver him from harm. As believers, we can learn from David’s example and place our trust in God even in the midst of challenging circumstances.
  • Deception and God’s Standards:While Michal’s actions prevented harm from coming to David temporarily, her use of deception through the image was not aligned with God’s principles. As followers of God, we are called to live in truth and honesty, avoiding any form of deception.
  • God’s Providence:This passage highlights God’s providential care for His people. Despite Saul’s attempts to kill David, God used Michal’s actions to protect David and allow him to escape. It demonstrates God’s sovereignty and His ability to work through human circumstances to fulfill His purposes.

In summary, 1 Samuel 19:13 recounts Michal’s deception to protect David from Saul’s messengers. Although her actions were not aligned with God’s principles, the passage highlights God’s providence and the importance of trusting Him in difficult situations while living in truth and honesty.
