Listen to this article

“And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I shot at a mark.”

In this verse, Jonathan is speaking to David about a plan they devised to communicate covertly in order to ascertain King Saul’s intentions toward David. To better understand the significance of this verse, we should examine the context and explore the broader themes present in this passage.

Context:At this point in the story, Saul’s jealousy and fear of David have reached a critical point. Jonathan, Saul’s son and David’s close friend, realizes that his father intends to harm David. In order to confirm this suspicion and warn David, Jonathan devises a plan where he will shoot arrows and send a signal to David, indicating Saul’s true intentions.

Friendship and Loyalty:The relationship between Jonathan and David is a central theme throughout the book of 1 Samuel. Their bond is characterized by loyalty, trust, and mutual respect. Despite the risk involved, Jonathan is willing to defy his father and assist David, demonstrating the depth of their friendship. This verse showcases Jonathan’s commitment to protecting David and keeping their friendship intact.

Covert Communication:Jonathan’s plan to shoot three arrows and convey a message to David represents their effort to communicate secretly. By shooting the arrows in a particular manner, Jonathan intends to communicate to David whether it is safe or dangerous for him to return to Saul’s presence. This covert communication highlights their resourcefulness and the lengths they are willing to go to ensure David’s safety.

Faith in God’s Guidance:Though not explicitly mentioned in this verse, it is important to note that throughout the story, both Jonathan and David exhibit a strong reliance on God’s guidance and intervention. Their actions are driven by their trust in God’s providence and His plans for their lives. Their friendship and actions in this narrative reveal their faith in God’s sovereignty.
