Listen to this article

“And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him.”

1 Samuel 20:35 is part of a larger narrative involving Jonathan, the son of King Saul, and David, who would later become the renowned king of Israel. This particular verse describes a specific event that took place during their friendship and their efforts to protect David from Saul’s jealousy and pursuit.

Background:Prior to this verse, Jonathan and David had made a covenant of friendship, demonstrating their deep bond and loyalty to each other. Saul, Jonathan’s father, had grown jealous of David’s popularity and success, which led to a strained relationship between David and Saul.

Meeting in the Field:In 1 Samuel 20:35, Jonathan and David plan a meeting in the field. This location was significant because it provided a private and neutral place away from the palace where Saul could not interfere. The meeting was arranged at a specific time, highlighting Jonathan’s commitment to the friendship and his determination to protect David.

The Little Lad:The verse mentions that a “little lad” accompanied Jonathan to the field. While the identity of the lad is not explicitly stated, it is possible that he served as a messenger or helper. This detail emphasizes the secrecy and caution exercised by Jonathan and David to avoid detection.

Themes of Friendship and Loyalty:Throughout this chapter, the theme of friendship between Jonathan and David is prominent. Jonathan’s actions demonstrate his unwavering loyalty to David, despite the conflict between his father and his friend. Their covenant of friendship serves as a powerful example of selfless love and devotion.

Trust in God’s Plan:David’s trust in God’s providence is evident in this narrative. Despite facing danger from Saul, he relies on God’s guidance and protection. David’s faith is an essential aspect of his character throughout his life, and it is exemplified in his interactions with Jonathan.

Overall, 1 Samuel 20:35 provides a glimpse into the enduring friendship between Jonathan and David. Their commitment to each other, along with their reliance on God, serves as an inspiration for believers to value and uphold genuine friendships grounded in loyalty, trust, and the fear of the Lord.
