1 Samuel 21:15

Listen to this article

“Have I need of mad men, that ye have brought this fellow to play the mad man in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?”

In this verse, King Achish of Gath is speaking to his servants concerning David, who had fled to the land of the Philistines to seek refuge from King Saul, who was seeking his life. However, David’s presence in Gath had become known, and he was brought before King Achish. Sensing the danger, David feigned madness to escape the situation.

This verse offers several points worth exploring:

Context:To understand the significance of this verse, it is important to grasp the broader context:of the story. David was anointed by the prophet Samuel to be the next king of Israel while Saul was still on the throne. Saul, filled with jealousy and fear of David’s rising popularity, sought to kill him. David, therefore, fled and found temporary refuge among the Philistines, Israel’s enemies.

David’s actions:Faced with the risk of being recognized and captured, David resorts to pretending to be mad. By acting in this way, he hopes to convince King Achish that he poses no threat and therefore should be dismissed. David’s decision to feign madness was a shrewd strategy to preserve his life.

God’s providence:Although David was on the run, he knew that God’s plan for him to become the future king of Israel had not changed. It is interesting to note that even in his desperate situation, God provided a way for David to escape harm. By using his wits and acting in an unconventional manner, David was able to deceive King Achish and avoid capture. This event showcases God’s sovereignty and His ability to protect His chosen ones.

The perception of David:King Achish’s reaction to David’s behavior reveals the common perception of those afflicted with madness. He questions the need for a “mad man” to be brought before him, expressing his disbelief that someone like David, who appeared deranged, could be a threat or worthy of attention. David’s act was so convincing that it worked to his advantage in escaping danger.

This verse not only provides insight into the challenging circumstances David faced but also highlights the resourcefulness and reliance on God that characterized his actions. David’s story reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s guidance in difficult situations and trusting in His providence. Furthermore, it demonstrates that God can use unconventional means to protect and deliver His people.
