1 Samuel 21:14
Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man is mad: wherefore then have ye brought him to me?
1 Samuel 21:14 (KJV)
Context
David fled from King Saul, who sought his life out of jealousy. He came to Gath, a Philistine city ruled by King Achish. David was known there as the warrior who had slain Goliath, so he faced great danger. To protect himself, he changed his behavior and acted like a madman, scratching marks on the gate and letting saliva run down his beard.
Meaning
Achish saw David’s strange actions and concluded that he was insane. His question, “wherefore then have ye brought him to me?” shows annoyance and disbelief. The king had no use for a madman, so he did not see David as a threat. This response, whether Achish truly believed David was mad or chose to treat him that way, spared David’s life. The king’s words also reveal his irritation with his servants for bringing such a person into his presence.
Biblical connections
The title of Psalm 34 says it was written “when he changed his behaviour before Abimelech; who drove him away, and he departed.” That psalm praises God for deliverance, showing that David trusted God even while using practical cunning. His outward madness did not contradict his inward faith. The psalm’s title directly ties this moment of feigned insanity to David’s later praise for God’s protection.
Application
David’s desperate situation reminds believers that God can protect them even in hostile places. Seeking refuge among enemies was risky, yet God preserved him. This encourages trust in God’s care when circumstances seem hopeless. It also warns against relying only on human plans; David’s ruse worked, but his safety came from God’s providence. Believers can learn to combine wise action with prayerful dependence on God.
Reflection
God’s faithfulness does not depend on our perfect choices. David’s fear led him to deception, yet God remained with him. This invites honest reflection on how we respond to danger and whether we turn to God first. Even in chaotic moments, God can advance His purposes and prepare His people for what lies ahead. His care reaches us in our weakness and failure.
