See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking places where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah.

Context

David is a fugitive in the wilderness of Ziph, fleeing from King Saul, who wants to kill him out of jealousy. Saul speaks to the local people, the Ziphites, and orders them to find every hiding place where David may be. He demands that they return to him with certainty, so he can go with them and search David out throughout all the thousands of Judah.

Meaning

The phrase “thousands of Judah” refers to the clans or family divisions of the tribe of Judah. Saul’s words show his determination to conduct a thorough search. He will not give up until he finds David. Saul depends on the Ziphites for information, revealing that he cannot catch David alone. This verse shows the relentless danger David faced as a hunted man.

Biblical connections

Earlier in this chapter, the Ziphites had already told Saul that David was hiding in their region (1 Samuel 23:19). Now Saul gives them a direct command to confirm every detail. This connection shows how Saul used local informants to track David. Yet God continued to protect His anointed servant, even when people around David were willing to betray him.

Application

Saul’s lack of trust stands in contrast to David’s loyalty. Although David had served Saul faithfully, Saul suspected treachery and sought confirmation from others. Believers can learn to trust God’s protection even when people are untrustworthy. David’s integrity remained strong despite unjust treatment. In difficult times, we should rely on God’s steadfastness rather than giving in to fear or revenge.

Reflection

God was preserving and preparing David for future kingship during this time of hiding. Saul’s pursuit seemed overwhelming, but it could not stop God’s plan. This verse reminds us that God sees our dangers and works through them for our good, even when we cannot see the outcome.
