1 Samuel 30:17
And David smote them from the twilight even unto the evening of the next day: and there escaped not a man of them, save four hundred young men, which rode upon camels, and fled.
1 Samuel 30:17 (KJV)
Context
David and his men returned to Ziklag and found it burned, with their families taken captive. The men were so bitter that they spoke of stoning David, but he strengthened himself in the Lord his God (1 Samuel 30:6). He asked the Lord through Abiathar the priest whether to pursue, and the Lord promised he would recover all (1 Samuel 30:7-8).
Meaning
This verse describes the climax of that pursuit. David attacked at dawn, catching the Amalekites off guard while they were celebrating their plunder. The battle lasted from twilight until the evening of the next day. The victory was complete: no man escaped except four hundred young men who fled on camels. This detail shows both the thoroughness of the judgment and that a small remnant escaped. The escape of these four hundred also reminds us that even in total victory, God’s mercy allows some to flee.
Biblical connections
David’s success came because he sought the Lord and followed His direction. The promise in 1 Samuel 30:8 was fulfilled exactly. This event also shows that God can bring complete deliverance from a situation of utter loss, just as He later restored all that the Amalekites had taken. The narrative emphasizes that David’s success was not due to his own military might but because he relied on God’s guidance.
Application
First, in crisis, seek God’s guidance before acting. David did not rely on his own strength but inquired of the Lord. Second, faith must lead to decisive action. David mobilized his men and pursued the enemy. Third, perseverance is rewarded. The battle lasted an entire day, yet steadfastness brought total victory. Finally, restoration calls for generosity. In the following verses, David shared the recovered goods with the elders of Judah.
Reflection
This verse reminds believers that God is faithful to His word. Even when loss seems total, He is able to restore. Trusting God, acting boldly, and responding with gratitude are marks of a life lived under His providence. When we face devastation, we can strengthen ourselves in the Lord, seek His direction, and believe that He will recover what has been lost.
