2 Samuel 3:16

Posted on 26 Jan at 17:22

“And her husband went with her along weeping behind her to Bahurim. Then said Abner unto him, Go, return. And he returned.”

This verse is a part of the narrative surrounding the political situation in Israel after the death of King Saul and the ascension of David as the new king. It highlights a significant event involving Abner, who was a prominent military commander and an influential figure in Saul’s reign, and David, who was chosen by God to be the next king of Israel.

Abner’s journey with Michal: Michal was Saul’s daughter and David’s first wife. After Saul’s death, Michal was given in marriage to another man named Paltiel. However, Abner, seeking to strengthen his position and unite the kingdom under Ish‑bosheth, Saul’s remaining son, took Michal from Paltiel and brought her back to David. As they traveled, Michal’s husband followed them, weeping behind her. This indicates the emotional turmoil and distress caused by the separation.

Abner’s instruction to Michal’s husband: Upon reaching Bahurim, Abner instructs Michal’s husband to return home. The reason for this instruction is not explicitly mentioned in the verse, but it may have been an act to maintain peace and avoid conflict. Abner, being aware of David’s rightful claim to the throne, likely wanted to prevent any potential complications or tensions arising from Michal’s husband’s pursuit.

Michal’s husband’s obedience: The verse concludes by stating that Michal’s husband returned, complying with Abner’s directive. This shows his submission to the authority and decision of Abner, recognizing the political and royal implications of the situation.

Key lessons from 2 Samuel 3:16:

  • Respect for authority: Abner’s instruction to Michal’s husband demonstrates the importance of respecting and obeying those in positions of authority. While the circumstances may have been challenging and emotionally charged, Michal’s husband chose to honor Abner’s decision.
  • Political considerations: The verse highlights the political complexities and strategies involved in establishing David’s reign. Abner’s actions were driven by his desire to unite the kingdom under Ish‑bosheth, but the return of Michal to David ultimately played a part in fulfilling God’s plan for David to become king over all Israel.
  • Emotional impact: The mention of Michal’s husband weeping behind her reminds us of the emotional toll that political decisions and power struggles can have on individuals and families. It serves as a reminder to approach matters of power and authority with compassion and empathy for those affected.

In conclusion, 2 Samuel 3:16 captures a significant moment in the political landscape of Israel as Abner returns Michal to David. It emphasizes the importance of respecting authority, highlights the political intricacies of the time, and reminds us of the emotional impact such decisions can have.
