2 Samuel 3:17

And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, Ye sought for David in times past to be king over you:

2 Samuel 3:17 (KJV)

In 2 Samuel, David has been anointed king over Judah and reigns from Hebron, while the northern tribes still follow the house of Saul. Abner, the commander of Saul’s army, now speaks to the elders of Israel, the tribal leaders, to persuade them to accept David as king over the whole nation. His communication is a strategic move to end the division and unite the tribes under David.

Abner’s words are both a reminder and a call to action. He tells the elders, “Ye sought for David in times past to be king over you.” This shows that the people’s desire for David was not new; it had existed earlier, likely because David was already known as God’s anointed. Abner uses this shared memory to urge the elders to act on their earlier intention. His appeal carries weight because he had been a leading figure in Saul’s army, and now he uses his influence to advance David’s kingship.

This moment connects with God’s earlier promise to David. In 1 Samuel 16:13, Samuel anointed David as the future king, and the Spirit of the Lord came upon him. Saul himself had acknowledged that David would reign (1 Samuel 24:20). Abner’s appeal, therefore, is not merely political; it aligns with the divine plan that David would rule over all Israel. The elders’ earlier seeking of David reflects a general expectation that God had already set in motion.

This verse encourages believers to recognize and support the leaders God has chosen. It also shows the value of unity. Just as Abner worked to bring the tribes together, Christians today should seek harmony in their churches and communities. Leaders, in turn, should align their decisions with God’s will, as David did. When people remember God’s past guidance, they can move forward with confidence in His purposes.

Consider how God often works through human leaders and timely conversations. Abner’s words remind us that God’s plans may advance through the influence of people in positions of authority. Reflect on your own role in promoting unity and supporting those whom God has placed in leadership. Trust that God, who directed the hearts of the elders, can also direct the hearts of leaders today.
