2 Samuel 8:14

Posted on 27 Jan at 11:39

And he put garrisons in Edom; thorowout all Edom put he garrisons, and all they of Edom became Dauids seruants: and the Lord preserued Dauid whithersoeuer he went. 2 Samuel 8:14 (KJV)

This verse is part of a chapter that describes the military victories of King David, who reigned over Israel after Saul. Let’s break it down and explore its context and significance.

Historical Context: During David’s reign, he successfully expanded the territorial borders of Israel. In 2 Samuel 8, the chapter from which this verse is taken, David’s military campaigns and conquests are highlighted. He defeats the Philistines, Moabites, and the king of Zobah, among others. Verse 14 specifically mentions his actions in Edom.

Garrisons in Edom: The verse states that David established garrisons in Edom. A garrison refers to a fortified military post or station. By placing garrisons throughout Edom, David ensured the security and control of the region. This strategic move demonstrated David’s ability to establish his authority over neighboring lands.

Edom becomes David’s servants: The verse further states that all the people of Edom became David’s servants. This implies that Edom, as a conquered nation, recognized David’s authority and submitted to him. They became subject to his rule and were expected to provide support and loyalty to the king.

The LORD preserves David: The verse concludes by acknowledging that the Lord preserved David wherever he went. This statement highlights the divine favour and protection David experienced throughout his reign. It underscores the belief that David’s military successes were not solely a result of his own skills and strategies but also a reflection of God’s presence and guidance in his life.

The LORD’s provision for David: Verse 15 emphasizes that the LORD gave David rest from all his enemies, underscoring the belief that David’s military successes were aided by divine favor and protection.

Overall, this verse showcases David’s military achievements and demonstrates his ability to expand Israel’s influence over neighbouring territories. It also emphasizes the role of God in David’s success and serves as a reminder of the divine favour bestowed upon him. It’s important to consider the broader context of the Bible and the narrative surrounding this verse. Studying additional verses and related passages can provide a deeper understanding of David’s reign, his relationship with God, and the theological themes presented in the Book of Samuel.
