2 Samuel 8:14
And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all they of Edom became David’s servants. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.
2 Samuel 8:14 (KJV)
Context
This verse closes a chapter that records King David’s military victories over the Philistines, Moabites, and the king of Zobah. In Edom, a neighboring nation to the southeast, David placed garrisons throughout the land. The Hebrew word for “garrisons” can also mean “governors” or “prefects,” showing that David established both military and administrative control, not just a temporary occupation. These fortified posts held stationed soldiers or governors, securing the region and making Edom’s submission clear.
Meaning
By placing garrisons in Edom, David secured the region and made its people his servants. This meant they recognized his authority and were expected to support and obey him. The verse then makes a vital statement: “the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.” This is not merely a report of military skill; it is a confession that David’s safety and success came from God. The Hebrew term for “garrisons” can also be rendered as “governors” or “prefects,” indicating that David established administrative control, not just a military presence. This dual control shows that God’s blessing extended to both protection and governance.
Biblical connections
The parallel account in 1 Chronicles 18:13 confirms that David put garrisons in Edom and that the Lord gave him victory wherever he went. This reinforces the theme of divine enablement. The covenant God made with David included both military success and divine safeguarding, pointing forward to the ultimate Davidic King, Jesus Christ, whose kingdom is established and preserved by God. The chapter as a whole records David’s defeats of the Philistines, Moabites, Ammonites, and the king of Zobah, and this verse specifically highlights his control over Edom. God’s preservation accompanies faithful obedience, and He grants victory to His chosen king.
Application
David’s example teaches that success in God’s purposes comes through dependence on Him, not through human strength alone. God’s protection extends to every area of life, just as it did for David. Believers can trust that God is faithful to preserve those who walk in obedience to Him, even in the midst of conflict and responsibility. This passage shows that God’s covenant promises include both success and safeguarding, and that His protection is not limited to spiritual matters but covers all aspects of life.
Reflection
Consider how God has preserved you in your own journeys. David’s victories were not merely his own achievements; they were signs of God’s faithful presence. This verse invites you to acknowledge God’s hand in your successes and to rely on Him for the challenges ahead, knowing that He who was with David is also with you. Just as God preserved David wherever he went, He is able to preserve you in every place and circumstance, if you depend on Him.
