1 Chronicles 18:13

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“And he put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David’s servants. Thus the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.”

Context:Before diving into the specific verse, it’s important to understand the context of the passage. 1 Chronicles is a book of the Old Testament that provides a historical account of Israel’s kings and their reigns. Chapter 18 specifically focuses on King David’s military victories and the expansion of the kingdom of Israel.

Passage:Let’s read 1 Chronicles 18:13 (KJV) for better understanding: “And he put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David’s servants. Thus the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.”

Historical Background:In this verse, we see that King David placed garrisons in Edom. Edom was a region southeast of Israel, inhabited by the descendants of Esau, the brother of Jacob. The Edomites were often at odds with the Israelites throughout their history.

Military Victories:Prior to verse 13, we find a series of victories David achieved against various nations. He defeated the Philistines, the Moabites, the Ammonites, and the king of Zobah. These victories expanded the borders of Israel and established David as a powerful ruler.

Garrisons in Edom:In verse 13, we see that David established garrisons, which were military outposts or fortresses, in Edom. By doing so, David gained control over the region and made the Edomites his servants. This act further solidified David’s authority and extended his dominion.

Divine Preservation:The verse concludes by stating, “Thus the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.” This phrase highlights the divine intervention and favour upon David’s life and reign. God protected David from harm and ensured his success in all his endeavours.

  • Faithfulness in God’s Promises:David’s victories were not solely the result of his military prowess but were also attributed to God’s faithfulness. As believers, we can trust in God’s promises and rely on His guidance and protection.
  • Divine Assistance:David’s triumphs were evidence of God’s involvement in his life. Similarly, when we seek God’s guidance, rely on His strength, and submit to His will, He can help us overcome challenges and achieve success in our endeavours.
  • Recognition of God’s Sovereignty:David acknowledged that his victories were not solely due to his own efforts but were ultimately God’s work. It is crucial for us to recognise God’s sovereignty and give Him credit for the victories and blessings we experience in our lives.

Remember, Bible study is an ongoing process, and further exploration of the surrounding verses and related passages can provide deeper insights into the text.
