Listen to this article

“But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother: and Jonadab was a very subtle man.”

Context:2 Samuel 13:3 is part of a narrative that describes a tragic event in the life of King David’s family. It recounts the story of Amnon, one of David’s sons, and his pursuit of his half-sister Tamar. This event eventually leads to a series of unfortunate consequences and upheaval within the royal household.

Amnon and Jonadab:Amnon, the eldest son of David, develops an unhealthy desire for his half-sister Tamar, who is Absalom’s sister (also David’s son). The verse highlights the presence of Jonadab, who is described as Amnon’s friend and the son of David’s brother Shimeah. Jonadab is portrayed as a “subtle” or crafty man.

Jonadab’s Character:The term “subtle” used to describe Jonadab indicates his cleverness or shrewdness. Although the verse doesn’t provide further details about his motives, it suggests that Jonadab possesses cunning or strategic thinking.

Role of Jonadab:Throughout the subsequent events in this story, Jonadab plays a significant role in advising Amnon. He devises a plan for Amnon to pretend to be sick, requesting that David send Tamar to cook for him. This ploy enables Amnon to be alone with Tamar and eventually leads to his sinful actions against her.

Lessons from the Verse:

  • The Danger of Unwise Companions:Jonadab’s association with Amnon highlights the influence of companions on our actions. Amnon’s friendship with Jonadab, described as a subtle man, may have contributed to Amnon’s downfall by providing him with deceptive advice.
  • The Consequences of Cunning Manipulation:The verse serves as a reminder that cleverness or subtlety alone does not guarantee righteousness. Jonadab’s cunning nature, rather than being used for good, is employed to orchestrate a deceitful scheme that causes harm and contributes to the tragedy that unfolds.
  • The Importance of Seeking Godly Counsel:Amnon’s actions and the subsequent turmoil within the family could have been avoided if he had sought godly counsel instead of relying on the advice of a cunning friend. Seeking guidance from individuals with wisdom rooted in God’s principles is crucial to making wise choices.
  • The Need for Discernment:This verse underscores the need for discernment in our relationships. Not everyone who appears to be a friend has our best interests at heart. We should carefully assess the character and intentions of those we associate with, seeking companions who encourage righteousness and godliness.

In conclusion, 2 Samuel 13:3 provides a glimpse into the relationship between Amnon and Jonadab, emphasizing the latter’s subtlety. The verse highlights the danger of unwise companions, the consequences of cunning manipulation, the importance of seeking godly counsel, and the need for discernment in our relationships.
