“And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. And she said, Comest thou peaceably? And he said, Peaceably.”

Context:Before diving into the specific verse, it’s essential to understand the context. 1 Kings 2 records events at the end of David’s life and the beginning of Solomon’s reign as king. David was approaching the end of his life, and he had promised Bathsheba that her son Solomon would be the next king.

Adonijah’s previous attempt:Prior to this encounter, Adonijah had made a failed attempt to seize the throne for himself. He had gathered allies and organised a self-proclaimed coronation ceremony, which displeased both David and God. However, Nathan the prophet and Bathsheba intervened, reminding David of his promise to make Solomon the next king.

Bathsheba’s cautious response:When Adonijah comes to Bathsheba, she greets him by asking if he comes peaceably. This question shows Bathsheba’s caution and suggests that she might have been aware of Adonijah’s previous actions. Bathsheba’s concern for Solomon’s position as king and the stability of the kingdom is evident in her guarded response.

Adonijah’s response:Adonijah responds to Bathsheba, assuring her that he comes peaceably. His response might have been an attempt to convince her that he no longer harbours any ambitions to challenge Solomon’s reign or disrupt the peace in the kingdom.

Symbolism and lessons:This encounter between Bathsheba and Adonijah reveals a few significant points:

  • Respect for David’s promise: Bathsheba’s actions in this verse demonstrate her commitment to ensuring that David’s promise to make Solomon king is upheld. She plays an active role in protecting Solomon’s position, safeguarding the dynasty, and securing the kingdom’s stability.
  • The consequences of ambition: Adonijah’s failed attempt to take the throne highlights the danger of unchecked ambition. It serves as a cautionary tale against seeking personal gain or power at the expense of others and the established order.
  • The importance of peace: Bathsheba’s question about coming peaceably emphasizes the significance of maintaining peace within the kingdom. The stability and harmony of a nation are vital, and conflicts and power struggles can lead to chaos and division.

Overall message This verse sets the stage for the transition of power from David to Solomon, showcasing the importance of honouring promises, safeguarding the stability of the kingdom, and exercising wisdom and caution in dealing with potential threats.

Remember to explore the surrounding verses and chapters for a more comprehensive understanding of the narrative and the lessons conveyed in the larger context of 1 Kings 2.
