1 Kings 4:29
And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore.
1 Kings 4:29 (KJV)
Context
1 Kings tells of Solomon, who became king of Israel after his father David. This verse appears after a description of Solomon’s wisdom, which he received from God. The opening words make clear that this wisdom was not gained by human effort or natural intellect alone; it was a divine gift. True wisdom comes from above, as James 3:17 confirms.
Meaning
The phrase “exceeding much” shows the great size and abundance of the wisdom God gave Solomon. His wisdom was greater than that of any other person of his time. This divine wisdom helped him rule well, make wise decisions, and judge matters fairly. The words “largeness of heart” do not mean a physical heart. They describe Solomon’s ability to understand, to feel with others, and to govern with a broad view. His heart was wide open, so he could see many sides of a matter and act with fairness. The comparison to sand on the sea shore is a picture of something vast and beyond measure. Sand is plentiful and endless, just as Solomon’s understanding and compassion were great. This simile shows that his heart was open to all people and their needs.
Biblical connections
This verse points to a truth found throughout Scripture: God gives wisdom generously to those who ask. James 3:17 describes the wisdom from above as pure, peaceable, and full of mercy. Solomon’s gift was not for his own honor alone; it equipped him to serve his people with justice and care.
Application
Believers can learn from this verse. First, we should remember that true wisdom comes from God. We need to seek His guidance and depend on His wisdom when we make decisions. Second, having a large heart means growing in empathy and compassion. It means being willing to listen to others and to consider their points of view. This attitude helps us love and serve others, just as Christ taught us in Matthew 22:39.
Reflection
Solomon’s wisdom was a gift, not a reward for his own effort. This truth calls us to humility. We have nothing that we did not receive from God. When we face decisions, we can ask the Lord for wisdom, knowing that He gives it freely to those who seek Him. His wisdom is vast, like the sand on the shore, and He shares it with His children.
