“And he sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month by courses: a month they were in Lebanon, and two months at home: and Adoniram was over the levy”

Context:To fully understand a Bible verse, it’s important to consider its context. In 1 Kings 5, Solomon is preparing to build the temple in Jerusalem. He seeks the help of King Hiram of Tyre to provide skilled labour and materials for the construction.

The significance of the verse:

  • Solomon sent a workforce of ten thousand men to Lebanon each month in rotation. These workers were responsible for cutting down and preparing the cedar and cypress trees for the construction of the temple.
  • The workers spent one month in Lebanon, working on the logging and cutting of the trees. Then they would spend two months at home, presumably to rest and recover from their labour.
  • Adoniram was appointed as the overseer or superintendent of the labour force. He was responsible for organising and managing the workforce.

Key themes and lessons from the verse:

  • Diligence: The verse highlights the organisational skills of Solomon. He arranged the workforce in a systematic manner, ensuring a continuous supply of materials for the construction project. This demonstrates the importance of planning and diligence in any endeavour.
  • Leadership: Solomon’s appointment of Adoniram as the overseer shows the necessity of capable leadership. A large‑scale project like building the temple required someone to oversee and manage the workforce efficiently.
  • Teamwork: The cooperation between Solomon and King Hiram of Tyre exemplifies the importance of collaboration and working together to achieve a common goal. It serves as a reminder that we can achieve more when we join forces with others.

Application:

  • Diligence and planning:We can apply the lesson of diligence and planning in our own lives. Whether it is in our work, studies, or personal goals, careful planning and consistent effort can help us achieve success.
  • Leadership:If we find ourselves in positions of leadership, we should strive to lead with wisdom and integrity, like Solomon and Adoniram. Good leadership involves organising, guiding, and supporting those under our care.
  • Collaboration:The example of Solomon and King Hiram reminds us of the power of collaboration. We should seek opportunities to work together with others, pooling our skills and resources to accomplish greater things for God’s glory.

Remember, studying the Bible is a continual process of seeking understanding and applying its principles to our lives. It is beneficial to read the surrounding verses and explore related passages to gain a deeper understanding of the broader context and message of Scripture.
