1 Kings 8:52

Posted on 11 Feb at 16:56

That thine eyes may be open vnto the supplication of thy seruant, and vnto the supplication of thy people Israel, to hearken vnto them in all that they call for vnto thee. 1 Kings 8:52 (KJV)

The prayer quoted above is part of Solomon’s dedication of the temple in Jerusalem. 1 Kings 8 records the extensive prayer of dedication that spans verses 22‑53, during which Solomon directly addresses the living God on behalf of himself, the nation, and the sanctuary. After praising God’s faithfulness, Solomon petitions that God keep His eyes open to the prayers of His servant and the people of Israel, asking that He hear and answer every request brought before Him. The same prayer is also found in the parallel account of the dedication in 2 Chronicles 6:38, underscoring its central place in the worship of Israel.

Solomon’s request reveals a deep desire for God’s active response. He asks that God not only hear the supplications but also answer them according to His perfect will. By acknowledging God as the source of help and blessing, Solomon seeks continued divine favor for the temple, the nation, and all who come before it. This expression of trust highlights the covenant relationship between God and His people, wherein God’s attentive ear is the foundation for their spiritual life.

From this prayer we can draw several practical lessons. First, we may approach God with confidence, knowing that He is attentive to our needs and concerns, just as Solomon trusted God’s willingness to hear Israel’s prayers. Second, the prayer models humble dependence; Solomon calls himself God’s servant, reminding us to recognize our total reliance on Him. Third, the emphasis on “hearken unto them in all that they call for unto thee” encourages persistence in prayer, urging believers to bring their requests continually before the Lord while trusting in His timing. Fourth, the prayer is not merely about personal desire but about aligning our petitions with God’s will, prompting us to seek His purpose above our own. Overall, 1 Kings 8:52 reminds believers of the vital importance of prayer, faith, and dependence on God, inviting us to approach Him with confidence, humility, perseverance, and a heart that seeks His perfect will.
