1 Kings 8:52
That thine eyes may be open unto the supplication of thy servant, and unto the supplication of thy people Israel, to hearken unto them in all that they call for unto thee.
1 Kings 8:52 (KJV)
Context
Solomon spoke these words while dedicating the temple in Jerusalem. The dedication prayer in 1 Kings 8:22-53 asks God to keep His eyes open to the prayers of His servant and of all Israel. The parallel account in 2 Chronicles 6:38 shows how central this prayer was to Israel’s worship. In this prayer, Solomon also acknowledges that God cannot be contained in a building, yet He chooses to hear prayers offered toward it.
Meaning
“Thine eyes may be open” means God’s attentive care, not literal sight. “Supplication” is earnest prayer or plea. Solomon asks God to hear and answer every request brought before Him. The phrase “all that they call for unto thee” shows that no request is too small for God’s attention. Yet the prayer implies that requests should align with God’s will and glory. This verse highlights the importance of prayer and God’s faithfulness to His people.
Biblical connections
This prayer points to Christ, who is the true temple and mediator. Through Him, believers have access to God, and He intercedes for them. The temple was a shadow of the greater reality found in Jesus. Therefore, believers can approach God with confidence, knowing He is attentive to their cries.
Application
This prayer teaches several lessons. First, approach God with confidence, knowing He is attentive to your needs. Second, pray with humble dependence, as Solomon calls himself God’s servant. Third, be persistent in prayer, bringing your requests continually before the Lord while trusting His timing. Fourth, seek God’s purpose above your own, aligning your petitions with His will. Leaders can also model this prayer by interceding for their people, as Solomon did for the whole nation. The communal aspect of prayer is clear: Solomon intercedes not only for himself but for all Israel.
Reflection
God’s eyes are open to your supplications. He is faithful to His covenant and ready to hear His people. Because of Christ, you can pray boldly, knowing that your cries reach the Father. Let this verse encourage you to bring every concern to Him, trusting that He hears and answers according to His perfect will.
