1 Kings 8:22

And Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven:

1 Kings 8:22 (KJV)

This verse stands at the opening of Solomon’s prayer of dedication for the newly built temple in Jerusalem. The king has just overseen the completion of this sacred project, and now he positions himself before the altar of burnt offering in the court of the priests. His posture here is deliberate and meaningful, setting the stage for the prayer that follows.

Solomon’s posture reveals his heart. Standing before the altar of the Lord, he takes his place as the nation’s leader, yet his spread hands toward heaven express humility, reverence, and complete dependence on God. This outward gesture signifies surrender and acknowledgment of God’s authority. The altar itself represents the central place of worship and sacrifice, the focal point where Israel approached God. By standing before it, Solomon recognises the sacredness of the place where he seeks God’s presence and blessing.

The presence of all the congregation of Israel emphasises the unity and participation of the people in this momentous occasion. Solomon’s actions and prayer represent the collective aspirations of the nation as they come together to worship God. His leadership is not isolated; it is exercised visibly before the people he serves, and their presence underscores the corporate nature of this dedication.

The altar was typical of Christ, who is always to be in sight in prayer, and through whom all sacrifices of prayer and praise become acceptable to God. Just as the altar was the appointed place of approach in the Old Testament, Christ is the appointed mediator through whom believers draw near to the Father. Solomon’s gesture of spreading his hands toward heaven also echoes the posture of prayer found throughout Scripture, a physical expression of the soul’s reaching out to God.

While the temple in Jerusalem no longer exists, Solomon’s posture and attitude teach valuable lessons for believers today:

  • Recognising God’s presence: Just as Solomon sought God’s presence in the temple, we should acknowledge that God is with us wherever we are. We can approach Him with reverence and humility, acknowledging His authority and seeking His guidance.

  • Expressing dependence on God: Like Solomon, we should spread forth our hands in prayer, symbolising our reliance on God’s strength, wisdom, and provision. We can bring our concerns, praises, and petitions before Him, knowing that He hears and answers our prayers.

  • Leading others in worship: As believers, we have the opportunity to lead and inspire others in worship. Like Solomon, we can set an example by demonstrating humility, reverence, and a sincere desire to seek God’s presence. We can encourage others to join us in seeking God’s favour and aligning their lives with His will.

This verse reminds us of the importance of acknowledging God’s presence, expressing dependence on Him, and leading others in worship. It encourages us to approach God with reverence, recognising His authority in our lives and seeking His guidance and blessings. Solomon’s example calls us to examine our own posture before God, both physically and spiritually, and to approach Him with the same humility and expectation.
