1 Kings 8:59

Posted on 11 Feb at 16:59

And let these my wordes wherewith I haue made supplication before the Lord, be nigh vnto the Lord our God, day and night, that hee maintaine the cause of his seruant, and the cause of his people Israel at all times, as the matter shall require: 1 Kings 8:59 (KJV)

This verse concludes the prayer of dedication that King Solomon offered at the dedication of the temple in Jerusalem. In this prayer Solomon acknowledges God’s faithfulness and petitions for God’s continual presence and intervention on behalf of the people of Israel.

Supplication and Prayer: Solomon begins by acknowledging that he has prayed before the Lord, highlighting the central role of prayer in the relationship between God and His people. He models a posture of seeking God’s guidance, provision, and aid, inviting believers to come before God in humble petition.

Desire for Nearness to God: Solomon prays that his words would be “nigh unto the LORD our God day and night.” This expresses a longing for a close, ongoing relationship with God, a constant awareness of divine presence, and the need for continual communication with Him.

God as Protector and Advocate: Solomon asks that God “maintain the cause of his servant, and the cause of his people Israel at all times.” This plea reflects trust in God’s justice, sovereignty, and protective care, recognizing that only the Lord can uphold the rights and causes of His servants and the nation of Israel.

Trust in God’s Timing: The phrase “as the matter shall require” (or “as the matter shall require for each day”) acknowledges that God’s interventions occur according to His perfect wisdom and timing. It calls believers to submit to His providential plan, trusting that His ways are higher than ours.

And may the LORD, the God of Israel, be glorified, as He hath said, and be exalted upon every thing that hath been made, for ever, world without end.

Overall, 1 Kings 8:59 reminds readers of the importance of prayer, the desire for intimacy with God, and reliance on His faithful sovereignty in sustaining both individual and communal causes. It encourages believers to seek God’s presence daily, trust His timing, and rest in the assurance that He will maintain the cause of His servant and His people Israel.
