“And let these my words, wherewith I have made supplication before the Lord, be nigh unto the Lord our God day and night, that he maintain the cause of his servant, and the cause of his people Israel at all times, as the matter shall require.”

This verse is part of the prayer of dedication that King Solomon offered at the dedication of the temple in Jerusalem. In this prayer, Solomon acknowledges God’s faithfulness and prays for God’s continual presence and intervention on behalf of the people of Israel.

Here are some key points we can take from this verse:

  • Supplication and Prayer: Solomon begins by acknowledging that he has made supplication, or a humble and earnest prayer, before the Lord. This highlights the importance of prayer in our relationship with God. Solomon sets an example for us to come before God in prayer, seeking His guidance, provision, and intervention.
  • Nearness to God: Solomon prays that his words would be “nigh unto the Lord our God day and night.” This expresses the desire for a close and intimate relationship with God. It signifies the need for ongoing communication and a constant awareness of God’s presence in our lives. Solomon recognizes that it is through this nearness to God that he can find strength, wisdom, and help in times of need.
  • Maintaining the Cause: Solomon asks God to “maintain the cause of his servant, and the cause of his people Israel at all times, as the matter shall require.” This plea demonstrates Solomon’s trust in God’s justice and sovereignty. He acknowledges that God is the ultimate protector and advocate for His people. Solomon recognizes that God alone has the power to uphold the rights and causes of His servants and the nation of Israel.
  • Trusting in God’s Timing: Solomon’s prayer includes the phrase “as the matter shall require.” This implies that Solomon acknowledges that the timing and manner of God’s intervention will be according to His perfect wisdom and will. It reflects a humble recognition that God’s ways are higher than our ways and that we should trust in His providence and timing.

Overall, 1 Kings 8:59 reminds us of the significance of prayer and the importance of seeking God’s presence and intervention in our lives. It encourages us to trust in God’s faithfulness and sovereignty, knowing that He will maintain our cause and the cause of His people according to his perfect will.
