1 Kings 8:60

That all the people of the earth may know that the Lord is God, and that there is none else.

1 Kings 8:60 (KJV)

1 Kings 8 records the dedication of the temple in Jerusalem, built by King Solomon. In this chapter, Solomon prays a long prayer of dedication, acknowledging God’s faithfulness and asking God to hear from heaven, forgive sin, and maintain the cause of His people. This verse is the closing declaration of that prayer, stating its deepest purpose. The temple was not an end in itself; it was a place where God’s name would dwell and where prayer would be heard. Solomon’s final words reveal why all this mattered.

Solomon declares that the Lord alone is God, and there is no other. This is a clear statement of monotheism, the belief that only one true God exists. The word “Lord” here is the covenant name Yahweh, the God of Israel. The verse also shows the goal of all God’s actions: that all people of the earth would know this truth. The temple, the prayers, and God’s answers are not only for Israel’s benefit but also as a witness to every nation. God’s uniqueness is not a private truth for one people; it is a public reality meant to be known worldwide.

This verse echoes Moses’ words in Deuteronomy 4:39, where he calls Israel to know that the Lord is God in heaven above and on earth beneath, with no other. It also connects to the first commandment, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3). Both passages affirm God’s uniqueness and exclusivity. Solomon’s vision for all nations to know God points forward to the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20, where Jesus sends His disciples to make disciples of all nations. The same purpose runs through Scripture: God reveals Himself so that all peoples may acknowledge Him.

  • Worship and devotion: This verse calls believers to give wholehearted devotion to God alone. It challenges us to examine our lives and remove anything that takes God’s place in our hearts.

  • Mission and evangelism: Solomon’s desire for all peoples to know the Lord encourages us to share the good news of Jesus Christ. We are to be ambassadors of God’s kingdom, proclaiming His supremacy to those who have not yet heard.

  • God’s faithfulness: Solomon’s prayer acknowledges God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. This verse reminds us of God’s unchanging nature and steadfast love, reassuring us that He is always with us, guiding our paths.

God’s dealings with His people are never only for their own good. They are also a testimony to the nations. When God answers prayer, forgives sin, and maintains His people’s cause, the world sees that He alone is God. Believers are called to live in such a way that their lives point others to this truth. Every act of obedience and every word of witness can help all people of the earth know that the Lord is God, and that there is none else. This truth should shape how we pray, how we live, and how we speak about our faith.
