1 Kings 11:32
“But he shall have one tribe for my servant David’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel”
Context:To better understand the verse, let’s first look at the context. In 1 Kings 11, we find the account of Solomon, the son of David, and his reign as king over Israel. Despite his initial wisdom and devotion to God, Solomon allowed his heart to be turned away from the Lord due to his many foreign wives who led him astray into idolatry.
The Promise:In this verse, God is speaking to Jeroboam, one of Solomon’s officials. God tells Jeroboam that He will give him ten tribes and establish him as king over Israel. However, He adds that one tribe will remain under the rule of the Davidic dynasty for the sake of David and Jerusalem, the city that God had chosen.
David’s Sake:God’s promise to leave one tribe under the rule of David’s descendants fulfilled the covenant He made with David in 2 Samuel 7:12-16. God had promised David an everlasting dynasty, and this promise was not completely revoked, despite Solomon’s unfaithfulness. God’s faithfulness to His covenant with David shows His grace and mercy even in the face of disobedience.
Jerusalem’s Sake:God also mentions Jerusalem, the city He had chosen from among all the tribes of Israel. Jerusalem held great significance in the Old Testament as the place where God chose to establish His presence and where the temple was built. By leaving one tribe under the Davidic rule for Jerusalem’s sake, God demonstrated His ongoing commitment to His chosen city.
Application:There are a few key lessons we can draw from this verse: The Consequences of Disobedience:Solomon’s disobedience had severe consequences. As a result of his idolatry, the kingdom of Israel was divided after his death, and only one tribe remained under the Davidic dynasty. This serves as a reminder that our actions have consequences and that disobedience to God’s commands can lead us astray. God’s Faithfulness:Despite Solomon’s unfaithfulness, God remained faithful to His promises. He did not completely reject the Davidic dynasty but left a remnant tribe under their rule. This demonstrates God’s enduring faithfulness to His covenant and His commitment to His chosen people. The Importance of God’s Chosen City:Jerusalem held a special place in God’s plan and purposes. It was the center of worship and the dwelling place of His presence in the temple. This highlights the significance of recognizing and honoring the places and spaces that God has chosen for His work.
