1 Kings 13:5

Posted on 18 May at 11:20

The altar also was rent, and the ashes powred out from the altar, according to the signe which the man of God had giuen by the word of the Lord. 1 Kings 13:5 (KJV)

1 Kings 13:5 recounts a significant event that took place during the reign of King Jeroboam of Israel. To better understand the verse, we should examine the context and the surrounding verses. In this chapter, a man of God from Judah was sent by the Lord to prophesy against the altar in Bethel, which King Jeroboam had set up as a false worship centre, contrary to God’s commandments. The man of God pronounced a prophecy that a future king named Josiah would offer the bones of the false priests on this altar (1 Kings 13:2). This prophecy announced God’s judgment upon Jeroboam and his disobedience. The man of God also pronounced a prophecy that the altar would be torn apart and the ashes would be poured out on the day the king of Israel died (1 Kings 13:2). Now, let’s focus on 1 Kings 13:5 specifically. It describes the fulfilment of the sign given by the man of God. As the man of God proclaimed the word of the Lord, the altar was rent, or torn apart, and the ashes poured out from it. This supernatural event served as a confirmation of the prophecy’s validity and the divine authority behind the man of God’s message. The tearing of the altar symbolises the impending destruction of the idolatrous worship centre and the judgment that would come upon Jeroboam’s reign. The pouring out of the ashes further emphasises the annihilation and desecration of the false worship that had taken place at this altar.

Divine Authority: The man of God was speaking by the word of the LORD, which indicates that his message and actions were directly influenced by God. It demonstrates the power and authority of God’s word.

Prophecy and Fulfilment: The verse portrays the sign associated with a prophetic message given by the man of God. This event serves as evidence that God’s promises and prophecies will come to pass.

Consequences of Disobedience: The tearing of the altar and pouring out of ashes symbolise the consequences of Jeroboam’s disobedience. It shows that God is just and will judge those who turn away from His commands.

Authenticity of the Man of God: The supernatural signs accompanying the man of God’s prophecy authenticated his message. This signifies the importance of discerning true prophets and following God’s true Word.

Overall, 1 Kings 13:5 reminds us of God’s sovereignty, His faithfulness to fulfil His word, and the consequences that follow disobedience. It also underscores the significance of genuine prophets and the importance of discerning and adhering to God’s true message.
