1 Kings 15:29
And it came to pass, when he reigned, that he smote all the house of Jeroboam; he left not to Jeroboam any that breathed, until he had destroyed him, according unto the saying of the Lord, which he spake by his servant Ahijah the Shilonite:
1 Kings 15:29 (KJV)
Context
This verse records the fulfillment of a prophecy against the house of Jeroboam, the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel. After Solomon’s reign, the nation split into two kingdoms: Israel in the north and Judah in the south. Jeroboam had been raised up by God and given the ten tribes, but he turned from the true God, made golden calves, and led Israel into idolatry (1 Kings 12:25-33). Because of this, the Lord sent the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite to declare that Jeroboam’s dynasty would be cut off (1 Kings 14:7-11).
Meaning
Baasha, who had just killed Nadab, Jeroboam’s son, and taken the throne, struck down every member of Jeroboam’s family. He left none alive. This was not merely political ambition; it was the outworking of God’s word. The verse emphasizes that God’s spoken judgment is certain and will come to pass. The destruction was total, leaving no one to carry on Jeroboam’s name. God’s warnings are not empty threats.
Biblical connections
The fulfillment through Baasha, a wicked king, shows that God can use even ungodly instruments to accomplish His purposes. Yet this does not excuse their own sin; Baasha later faced judgment as well. The event also highlights the seriousness of leading others into sin. Jeroboam’s idolatry brought ruin on his entire family, demonstrating that sin has consequences that extend beyond the individual. The reliability of prophetic revelation is confirmed here.
Application
This sobering account calls believers to reverent fear of God’s word and a commitment to obedience. It reminds us that God’s promises—both of blessing and judgment—are faithful. Turning away from God’s commands carries severe consequences, so we must remain faithful to His covenant. Let this truth shape your daily walk with Him.
Reflection
Consider the weight of leading others in faith. Jeroboam’s choices destroyed his family. Yet God’s justice is righteous and purposeful. Trust that God’s word will always be fulfilled.
