1 Kings 17:8
“And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying,”
This verse marks the beginning of a significant story in the life of the prophet Elijah. Prior to this verse, Elijah had delivered a message from God to King Ahab, declaring a drought upon the land as a consequence of Israel’s disobedience. After delivering the message, God commanded Elijah to leave and hide himself by the Brook Cherith, east of the Jordan River. There, Elijah was miraculously sustained by ravens who brought him bread and meat.

The story continues as Elijah obeys the word of the Lord and arrives in Zarephath. There he encounters the widow and makes a request for food and water. Although she initially expresses her desperate situation with only a handful of flour and a little oil remaining, Elijah assures her that the Lord will miraculously multiply her resources, sustaining her and her household during the ongoing drought.
This story showcases God’s faithfulness to His prophet and His ability to provide in extraordinary ways. It also highlights the theme of obedience, as Elijah follows God’s commands, even when they seem unconventional or challenging.
