This verse records the widow of Zarephath’s response to the prophet Elijah during a severe drought in Israel. She had only a handful of meal and a little oil, enough for one final meal for herself and her son before they expected to die. Elijah asked her to make him a small cake first, and he delivered a promise from the LORD God of Israel: the barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth (1 Kings 17:14).
