1 Kings 17:16
And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Elijah.
1 Kings 17:16 (KJV)
Context
This verse closes the account of Elijah and a widow in Zarephath. A severe drought had struck Israel, and God sent Elijah to this Gentile town. There he found a widow gathering sticks, preparing what she thought would be her last meal for herself and her son. She had only a handful of meal and a little oil. Elijah asked her to make him a small cake first, promising that her supplies would not run out until rain returned to the earth.
Meaning
The verse records the exact fulfilment of that promise. The barrel of meal did not waste, and the cruse of oil did not fail. This was not a one-time miracle but a continued, daily sustaining work of God. The phrase “according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Elijah” shows that the miracle happened because God had spoken it through His prophet. The widow’s obedience came before the supply; she acted on God’s word, and God kept His word. This daily provision is a sign of God’s faithfulness, not just a past event but a pattern of how He cares for those who trust Him.
Biblical connections
This miracle of daily provision resembles the feeding of the five thousand in Matthew 14:19-20, where Jesus multiplied a small amount of food to feed a large crowd. Both events show the same divine power to provide abundantly from scarce resources. In both cases, the people received enough, and the supply continued as long as needed. The parallel reminds us that God’s power is not limited by our lack; He can sustain His people in every generation.
Application
God’s provision often comes through a steady, repeated supply rather than a sudden dramatic event. The widow had to trust God each day as she dipped into the barrel and the cruse. Believers today can learn to rely on God’s promises even when resources seem insufficient. Obedience to God’s word may seem costly, as it did for the widow, but it opens the way for His faithful care. When we give God what we have, even if it is small, He can multiply it for our needs and for the needs of others.
Reflection
This verse calls for trust in the reliability of God’s word. The widow did not see the whole future; she only had a promise. Yet she acted on it, and God proved faithful. When circumstances look hopeless, the same God who sustained the widow and her son still sustains those who trust and obey Him. His word does not fail, and His provision is enough for each day. We can rest in the certainty that what God has spoken, He will bring to pass.
