Matthew 14:19

Listen to this article

And hee commanded the multitude to sit downe on the grasse, & tooke the fiue loaues, and the two fishes, and looking vp to heauen, hee blessed, and brake, and gaue the loaues to his Disciples, and the Disciples to the multitude. Matthew 14:19 (KJV)

This verse is part of the account of Jesus feeding the multitude, commonly known as the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand. It is a powerful demonstration of Jesus’ divine power and compassion towards the people who followed Him. In this particular verse, Jesus commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass. By doing so, He organised the crowd and prepared them for what was about to take place. Then, Jesus took the five loaves of bread and the two fishes that were available. It is worth noting that the provision of only five loaves and two fishes seemed insufficient to feed such a large gathering. Next, Jesus looked up to heaven, acknowledging God’s provision and seeking His blessing. By looking up, Jesus demonstrated His dependence on the Father and His acknowledgment that all good things come from above. This action also served as a model of prayer for His disciples and those witnessing the event. After looking up to heaven, Jesus blessed the loaves and fishes. His act of blessing can be understood as consecrating the food, dedicating it to God’s use, and recognising God’s ability to multiply what was given. It is through this blessing that Jesus imparted His divine power and transformed the limited resources into an abundant provision. Following the blessing, Jesus broke the loaves. Breaking the bread symbolises the sacrifice of His body, which He would later demonstrate through His death on the cross. The act of breaking the bread also signified that it was to be distributed among the people. Finally, Jesus gave the loaves to His disciples, who, in turn, distributed them to the multitude. This distribution process involved the disciples actively participating in the miracle. As they obeyed Jesus’ instructions, the bread and fishes continued to multiply, ensuring that everyone present had more than enough to eat. Matthew 14:19 illustrates several important aspects of Jesus’ ministry. It highlights His authority to command and organise, His acknowledgment of God’s provision, His power to bless and multiply resources, and His reliance on His disciples to carry out His work. This miracle is not only a testament to Jesus’ divine nature but also a lesson in trust, faith, and selflessness. It encourages us to bring whatever limited resources we have, no matter how insignificant they may seem, and offer them to Jesus. He can take our meager offerings and multiply them beyond our imagination for the benefit of others. Overall, Matthew 14:19 reveals Jesus as the compassionate provider, the divine multiplier, and the one who empowers His disciples to participate in His work of blessing and feeding those in need.
