And he said,
Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. Matthew 14:29 (KJV)
“This verse is part of the well‑known account of Jesus walking on water, which took place after He had fed the five thousand. In this passage, Peter, one of the disciples, demonstrates an act of faith by stepping out of the ship to walk on the water toward Jesus.”
The context of this verse begins in Matthew 14:22, where Jesus sent the disciples ahead of Him in a ship to the other side of the sea while He went up to a mountain to pray. In the evening the ship was far from land, and the disciples encountered strong winds and waves.
In Matthew 14:25‑27 we read that Jesus came to the disciples walking on the sea. The disciples were terrified and troubled, but Jesus reassured them, “Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.”
At that point Peter, impulsive yet full of faith, responded to Jesus by saying, “Lord, if thou be willing, I will go unto thee on the water” (Matthew 14:28). His request shows a desire to share in Jesus’ miraculous power and presence, demonstrating his trust and faith.
In Matthew 14:29 Jesus answered simply, “Come.” Peter stepped out of the ship and began walking on the water toward Jesus. This incredible event showcases Peter’s faith and willingness to follow Jesus even in seemingly impossible circumstances.
The story then turns in Matthew 14:30‑31: “But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?” As Peter walked on the water he became aware of the strong winds and waves, fear crept in, and he began to sink, crying out for help. Jesus immediately reached out His hand, caught Peter, and chastised him for his lack of faith.
This account in Matthew 14:29 teaches several important lessons. First, it emphasizes the power of faith: Peter could walk on water as long as he kept his eyes fixed on Jesus and trusted in Him. When he shifted his focus to the turbulent circumstances, fear overtook him.
Second, the passage reveals that even when our faith wavers or doubt sets in, Jesus is always ready to rescue and help us. When Peter cried out, Jesus extended His hand and saved him, demonstrating the Lord’s compassion, grace, and willingness to assist us when we stumble.
Lastly, the story highlights the importance of maintaining a steadfast faith in the face of challenges. Although Peter faltered, we can learn from his experience and strive to keep our trust in Jesus unyielding, even amidst the storms of life.
