1 Kings 18:32

Posted on 18 May at 11:35

“And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.”

Context:In this passage, we find ourselves in the midst of a dramatic encounter between the prophet Elijah and the prophets of the false god Baal. Elijah, with unwavering faith in the one true God, challenges the prophets of Baal to a contest to determine which deity is truly God.

The key verse, 1 Kings 18:32, describes Elijah’s actions as he prepares to offer a sacrifice to the Lord. Let’s break it down and explore the significance of each element:

Building an Altar:Elijah takes stones and constructs an altar. The altar is a place of worship and sacrifice, where offerings are made to God. By building this altar, Elijah establishes a place to offer his sacrifice to the Lord.

In the Name of the LORD:Elijah builds the altar “in the name of the LORD.” This phrase signifies that the altar is dedicated and set apart for the worship of the one true God, Yahweh. It acknowledges that the Lord is the sole object of Elijah’s devotion and that this act of worship is solely for Him.

Making a Trench:Elijah then digs a trench around the altar. The trench is described as being “as great as would contain two measures of seed.” The purpose of the trench is not explicitly mentioned in this verse, but it becomes significant in the subsequent events.

The overall significance of this verse lies in Elijah’s unwavering commitment to the worship of God. Despite being surrounded by idolatry and opposition, Elijah takes deliberate actions to ensure that his worship is directed solely towards the Lord.

The building of the altar emphasizes the importance of setting apart dedicated places for worship and sacrifice. It symbolizes Elijah’s commitment to honor and serve the one true God.

The act of making a trench around the altar may serve multiple purposes. It could have been a practical measure to catch and hold the water that would be poured upon the altar later in the narrative (1 Kings 18:33-35). Additionally, it could signify a boundary between the worship of God and the idolatry practiced by the prophets of Baal.

Furthermore, the mention of “two measures of seed” suggests a significant amount. This abundance might symbolize the expectation of a fruitful harvest of blessings from God as a result of Elijah’s faithfulness and obedience.

In conclusion, 1 Kings 18:32 portrays Elijah’s unwavering devotion to God, as he constructs an altar in the name of the LORD and makes a trench around it. Through this act, Elijah sets himself apart from the false worship of Baal and demonstrates his commitment to the one true God. This passage reminds us of the importance of wholeheartedly dedicating ourselves to the worship and service of God and serves as an example of faithfulness amidst opposition.
