2 Kings 2:9

Posted on 18 May at 11:41

“And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.”

This verse is a part of the account of the transfer of prophetic ministry from the prophet Elijah to his successor, Elisha. It holds several significant lessons and insights for us as readers.

The Passing of the Mantle:Elijah and Elisha had journeyed together, and now they reached the Jordan River. Elijah knew that his time on earth was drawing to a close, and he offered Elisha an opportunity to ask for something before he departed. This event symbolizes the transition of authority and responsibility from one generation to the next. It demonstrates the importance of mentoring and training others to carry on the work of God.

Elisha’s Request:Elisha’s response to Elijah’s offer is noteworthy. He asks for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. This request is not about material possessions but a spiritual inheritance. In the Old Testament, the firstborn son would receive a double portion of the inheritance (Deuteronomy 21:17). By asking for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit, Elisha is expressing his desire to receive a greater measure of the same anointing and power that rested upon Elijah. It shows Elisha’s faith, hunger, and determination to continue the work of God.

Spiritual Inheritance and Anointing:Elisha’s request for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit goes beyond a mere desire for power and authority. It reflects the understanding that the anointing and power to serve God come from Him. Elisha recognizes that he needs God’s favour and empowerment to fulfill the calling upon his life. This verse teaches us the importance of seeking God’s anointing and relying on His strength as we serve Him.

Diligence and Commitment:Throughout the biblical account, Elisha demonstrated great dedication and faithfulness as he followed and served Elijah. He witnessed the miracles performed by Elijah and learned from his example. Elisha’s request for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit reveals the depth of his commitment and desire to continue the work of God. It reminds us of the importance of wholeheartedly pursuing God’s call on our lives and being diligent in our service to Him.

God’s Willingness to Answer:Elijah could have responded to Elisha’s request by saying it was impossible or beyond his control. However, Elijah recognizes that the decision is ultimately in God’s hands. The double portion of the spirit is not something Elijah can give on his own; it is a request that must be granted by God. This verse demonstrates God’s willingness to grant the desires of His servants when they align with His will and purposes.

In summary, 2 Kings 2:9 provides us with important lessons about the passing of spiritual authority, the desire for a greater measure of God’s anointing, the significance of spiritual inheritance, the need for diligence and commitment, and God’s willingness to answer the prayers of His faithful servants. It encourages us to seek God’s anointing and power as we serve Him and to be diligent in pursuing His calling on our lives.
