2 Kings 3:11

Posted on 18 May at 11:41

“But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may inquire of the LORD by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.”

Context:In 2 Kings 3, the kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom joined forces to fight against the Moabites. They embarked on a journey through the wilderness of Edom, but after seven days they found themselves in a dire situation, lacking water for their armies and their animals. This is the background leading up to Jehoshaphat’s question in verse 11.

Lessons from 2 Kings 3:11:

  • Seeking God’s Guidance:

Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, recognised the need for divine guidance and asked if there was a prophet of the Lord they could consult. This demonstrates the importance of seeking God’s counsel in times of need or decision-making. Instead of relying solely on their own wisdom, Jehoshaphat understood the value of seeking guidance from a prophet who could inquire of the Lord on their behalf. As believers, we should also seek God’s guidance through prayer and the study of His Word when faced with challenges or important decisions.

The Role of Prophets:The servant of the king of Israel identified Elisha as the prophet who served Elijah, highlighting the significance of the prophetic office. Prophets were chosen by God to convey His messages, provide spiritual insight, and guide His people. Elisha’s presence demonstrated God’s provision for His people even in the midst of challenging circumstances. In our lives, God may use various means, including spiritual leaders and mentors, to guide and encourage us.

Faithfulness and Service:The mention that Elisha was the one who poured water on the hands of Elijah highlights his faithful service and discipleship under Elijah’s mentorship. Elisha’s humble act of pouring water symbolises his commitment to serving God and His prophet. This verse reminds us of the importance of faithfulness, humility, and serving others. Like Elisha, we should be willing to serve faithfully in whatever capacity God calls us, understanding that our acts of service can be used by Him for greater purposes.

Application:

  • From this passage, we can learn the importance of seeking God’s guidance, recognising the role of spiritual leaders, and embracing faithfulness and service. When faced with challenges, let us not rely solely on our own understanding but turn to God in prayer and seek wisdom from those who are spiritually mature. Let us also be faithful in our service to God and others, knowing that our acts of obedience can have a significant impact on His kingdom.

Remember, while studying specific verses is valuable, it is essential to consider the broader context of the Bible and to interpret Scripture in light of its entirety.
