Genesis 39:2
And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
Genesis 39:2 (KJV)
Context
Joseph, the son of Jacob, was sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt. There he was purchased by Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard. This verse marks a turning point in Joseph’s life, for even in a foreign land and in slavery, the Lord was with him.
Meaning
The phrase “the LORD was with Joseph” shows a close and intimate relationship with God. Though far from family and facing hardship, Joseph found strength and guidance in God’s presence. The Hebrew word for “prosperous” conveys success and well-being, and the verse directly attributes this prosperity to the Lord’s presence. Joseph’s success was not dependent on his circumstances; he flourished even while serving in Potiphar’s house. This divine presence was not passive. It actively shaped Joseph’s life and work, making him successful in all he did.
Biblical connections
This divine presence was observable to others. In Genesis 39:3, Potiphar sees that the Lord is with Joseph and that the Lord makes all he does prosper. Later, in Genesis 39:5, the blessing extends to Potiphar’s household for Joseph’s sake. This shows that God’s presence with His servant brings blessing that reaches beyond the individual. The same theme appears throughout Scripture: God remains with His chosen servants even in exile or hardship, working for their good and His glory.
Application
Joseph’s example teaches that God’s presence can bring success even in the most unlikely situations. His integrity, diligence, and trustworthiness caused Potiphar to place him in a position of great trust. When we remain faithful to God in challenging circumstances, He is with us and can bring prosperity and success into our lives. This does not promise material wealth to all believers, but it assures that God’s presence is the source of true success. It also challenges the idea that prosperity always reflects personal merit; here, it is a gift of God’s presence.
Reflection
Joseph’s story reminds us that God is sovereign and faithful. He is with His people in adversity, and His presence brings blessing according to His purposes. As we reflect on this verse, may it encourage us to seek the presence of the Lord, trust in His guidance, and remain faithful in all circumstances, knowing that He can bring good out of difficult situations.
