2 Kings 3:18

Posted on 18 May at 11:41

“And this is but a light thing in the sight of the LORD: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.”

Context:This verse is part of the account of the alliance formed between the kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom to confront the Moabites, who had rebelled against Israel. The kings set out with their armies to march through the wilderness of Edom and were faced with a severe lack of water for themselves and their animals. They sought the counsel of the prophet Elisha, who assured them of victory over the Moabites and promised them water in abundance.

God’s Perspective:The verse begins with the statement that what they were about to witness was considered a “light thing” in the sight of the LORD. This indicates that the solution to their problem, as well as the upcoming victory, was not a challenge or difficult for God. It highlights His power and sovereignty over all things, including the circumstances they were facing. In our own lives, we can take comfort in knowing that nothing is too difficult for God to handle.

God’s Faithfulness:The verse continues by affirming that the LORD would deliver the Moabites into their hands. This reassurance demonstrates God’s faithfulness to His people. Despite the dire situation they found themselves in, God promised them victory. It reminds us that when we face challenges and obstacles, we can trust in God’s faithfulness to see us through. He is always with us, fighting on our behalf.

Trusting God:This verse encourages the kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom to trust in God’s promises. They were in a desperate situation, but instead of giving in to fear and despair, they sought the LORD’s guidance through His prophet. Likewise, we are called to trust in God’s promises and seek His guidance in every aspect of our lives. When we rely on Him and follow His lead, He will provide the solutions and victories we need.

God’s Provision:Along with promising victory, God also assured the kings of water in abundance. This was a practical need they had, as they were in a desert region and facing a severe drought. God’s promise of water demonstrated His ability to provide for His people’s physical needs. It teaches us that God cares about every aspect of our lives, and He is able to supply all our needs according to His riches in glory.

Application:The verse encourages us to approach God with our challenges and trust in His promises. It reminds us that God is not limited by our circumstances and that He is faithful to deliver us. We are called to rely on Him, seek His guidance, and have faith in His provision, knowing that He is able to overcome any obstacle we face. Remember, it is always beneficial to read the surrounding verses and consider the broader context of a passage for a more comprehensive understanding.
