2 Kings 4:16

Listen to this article

And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt imbrace a sonne. And she said, Nay my lord, thou man of God, doe not lie vnto thine handmaid. 2 Kings 4:16 (KJV)

This verse is part of the narrative of Elisha the prophet in 2 Kings 4. In this chapter, Elisha visits the town of Shunem, where a notable woman and her husband provide him with hospitality, building a small chamber for him to stay in whenever he passes by. In gratitude for their kindness, Elisha desires to bless them. The promise of a child was significant because she and her husband were childless, and it was seen as a great blessing and honor in biblical times to have children. The woman expresses doubt and asks Elisha not to deceive her.

Trusting God’s Promises: The woman’s initial response reveals her struggle with doubt and disbelief. She finds it hard to believe that she, a barren woman, would bear a child. This doubt is understandable given her circumstances and the natural limitations she faced. However, it also serves as a reminder to trust in God’s promises, even when they seem unlikely or impossible from a human perspective. Elisha’s prophecy ultimately comes true, demonstrating God’s faithfulness.

God’s Timing: Elisha specifies that the promise will be fulfilled “according to the time of life.” This phrase indicates that God’s promise would come to pass at the appointed time, according to His divine timing. Often, we may grow impatient waiting for God’s promises to be fulfilled in our lives. However, this verse reminds us that God’s timing is perfect and that He fulfills His promises at the right moment.

God’s Sovereignty: Elisha, as a man of God, speaks with divine authority, relaying God’s message to the woman. This highlights the sovereignty of God in orchestrating events and making the impossible possible. Despite the woman’s doubt, God’s plan prevails, demonstrating that nothing is too difficult for Him.

Application: Trust in God’s promises: Just as the woman doubted Elisha’s words, we may also struggle with doubt when faced with difficult or seemingly impossible situations. However, this verse encourages us to trust in God’s promises, knowing that He is faithful and capable of fulfilling what He has spoken. Patience in God’s timing: When we are eagerly waiting for God to fulfill His promises, it is essential to exercise patience and trust in His perfect timing. We should not grow discouraged or try to force our own solutions but instead rely on God’s faithfulness and sovereignty. Embrace the unexpected: The woman in this verse received a blessing she never anticipated. Likewise, God’s plans for our lives may not always align with our expectations. We should be open to receiving unexpected blessings from God and be willing to embrace them when they come. Remember, the Bible contains many lessons and applications, and it is beneficial to explore different commentaries, interpretations, and additional verses to gain a deeper understanding of God’s Word.
