2 Kings 4:15

Posted on 18 May at 11:19
Listen to this article

And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the doore. 2 Kings 4:15 (KJV)

The verse belongs to the narrative of Elisha and the Shunammite woman. In this account the Shunammite woman and her husband show great hospitality to the prophet, providing a furnished room and meals whenever he passes through their town. Because of their generosity Elisha seeks to bless them, and he calls the woman to convey what He intends.

Observation shows that Elisha directly summons the Shunammite woman. When she is called, she promptly comes to meet him, standing before the prophet ready to listen to what he has to say.

From this scene three key lessons emerge. First, prompt obedience: her quick response demonstrates a willingness to obey without hesitation, teaching us the importance of immediate obedience when God calls or instructs us. Second, expectant faith: her posture reflects faith and expectation that the prophet has something important to communicate, urging believers to approach God’s Word with eager anticipation of His guidance. Third, humility and respect: by standing before Elisha she acknowledges his prophetic authority and honors him as a messenger of God, reminding us to approach the Lord with humility, reverence, and recognition of His sovereignty.

Application follows naturally. When we sense God’s leading or receive instruction through Scripture, we should respond with obedience and without delay, even if it requires sacrifice or a step of faith, thereby demonstrating trust and opening ourselves to His blessings. We are also called to nurture expectant faith in God’s promises, trusting that He will fulfill them as we meditate on His Word, providing guidance, comfort, and provision. Finally, cultivating humility and reverence in prayer, worship, and study allows us to honor God’s authority, surrender our will, and grow deeper in relationship with Him, inviting His continued guidance and blessing.

Remember that a thorough Bible study involves digging deeper into the context, examining related verses, consulting reliable commentaries, and applying the insights gained to everyday life.
